The name of the award, The Bilby, is an acronym of "Books I Love Best Yearly". ] The award is a children's choice award. Each year Queensland students are asked to nominate their favourite book, and only nominations for the winners from the last two years are excluded. The books in this shortlist are grouped into the three age level categories and students are encouraged to read books from the list and chose their favourite title. The votes are counted and winners for the categories are announced in September on International Literacy Day.
