He was created Cardinal-Priest of "
S. Maria in Portico " (deaconry elevatedpro hac vice to title) and reservedin pectore in the consistory ofDecember 14 1840 . His name was published in the consistory ofApril 21 1845 . He participated in the conclave of 1846 that electedPope Pius IX . He was a member of thetriumvirate that governed Rome between July 1849 and April 1850 after the short livedRoman Republic . He was appointed as Secretary of the Congregation for Memorials serving from 1855 to 1857. He was appointed as Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church on19 March 1857 holding the post until his death. He opted for the order of cardinal bishops, taking thesuburbicarian see ofAlbano on17 December 1860 . He was appointed as Prefect of theCongregation of the Index by Pope Pius on5 September 1861 . He was appointed asArchpriest of theBasilica of St. John Lateran on8 March 1863 . During the cholera epidemic that affected his diocese, he assisted the sick and the dying and he himself contracted the malady, dying in 1867. His funeral took place in the church ofSanta Maria in Portico .
