Gregory Melleuish

Gregory Melleuish is an Australian associate professor of history and politics at the University of Wollongong. Subjects he teaches include Australian politics, political theory, world history and ancient history [http://www.duffyandsnellgrove.com.au/authors/melleuish_g.htm] . Previously, he taught European history at the University of Melbourne and Australian Studies at the University of Queensland [http://www.uow.edu.au/arts/staffinfo/UOW018770.html] .

Political leanings

Melleuish is a political conservative, who supports liberalism and admires the conservative philosopher Edmund Burke. He also occasionally writes columns for The Australian, Australia's national newspaper. In these columns, he often advocates laissez-faire economic policies [http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,22058040-7583,00.html] and criticises the way history is often taught in Australian schools and universities. His main personal interests include:

* Australian political culture
* Australian intellectual history with an emphasis on political, cultural and religious ideas
* World history, in particular the role of the state, war and commercial activity
