The school was built due to the expanding population of
Chippenham including the estates atPewsham andCepen Park . In1998 , while the land was being cleared, two unexploded bombs were found on the site and thearmy had to carry out acontrolled explosion . The school is located on the east side of
Chippenham in Stanley Lane, near thePewsham estate.Admissions
Every year the school admits around 180 children (6 tutor groups of 30 students) from local primary schools. These children come from the Chippenham area which is also served by
Hardenhuish and Sheldon schools as well as from surrounding towns such asMelksham 'sThe George Ward Technology College andCorsham 'sThe Corsham School , as well as an increasing number of admissions from nearbyCalne , who select Abbeyfield as their preferred school over Calne'sThe John Bentley School .Ofsted
Since its first inspection in 2002 the school has been inspected twice by
Ofsted .
