- Bartram & Sons Ltd
This
Sunderland shipbuilding firm was founded in 1838 by George Bartram and John Lister. Their partnership was dissolved in 1852 and Bartram's son Robert Appleby Bartram was taken into the business. On his father's retirement in 1871 Robert went into partnership with George Haswell to establish Bartram, Haswell & Co at South Dock, Sunderland. Haswell retired in 1889 and Robert Appleby Bartram's sons George and William joined the firm now known as Bartram & Sons, becoming a limited company in 1922. The firm was bought out byAustin & Pickersgill in 1968 and nationalised along with that firm in 1977. Bartram's yard closed in 1978 when all work transferred to Austin & Pickersgill's yard at Southwick.L A Ritchie (ed): The Shipbuilding Industry, a guide to historical records (Manchester University Press 1992)
