Merrick Andrews, a young and enterprising
Jamaica n journalist and publisher living in theBritish Virgin Islands , ownsAndrews Media Corporation (AMC), a small but rapidly growing international media group founded in 2005 and incorporated in April 2006. AMC includes Alliance News Ltd, operators of several BVI websites including the flagship BVI News Online, www.bvinews.com, which publishes breaking news throughout the day, every day of the week.AMC also publishes several other news and information sites and print publications in the Caribbean, some of which will be unveiled over the next 18 months.
Andrews was born in Kingston, Jamaica in November 1982 to Sylvia Lynton and Noel Andrews, and grew up in the parish of St. Catherine.
His interest in journalism began at his alma mater
Charlemont High School in 1998/1999 when he co-founded a short-lived school newspaper named The Eagle and was appointed editor of the school’s year book.During his high school years he freelanced for his parish’s community weekly, the now defunct Twin City Sun and after graduating in the summer of 1999 he went on to freelance for sports weekly,
SportsGlobe ,X-News and several other publications.Several months later in November of that same year, he took up his dream job at the century-plus old Gleaner Company Ltd, publisher of the daily flagship Gleaner where within two years he was promoted from trainee sports reporter to a full-fledged staff reporter, Lifestyle reporter and Youth Link magazine coordinator. He also worked for The Associated Press, international news agency and during his time at The Gleaner did several journalism courses including one at CARIMAC, UWI, Mona.
He is winner of the Press Association of Jamaica award for a human interest feature in 2001. The
Youth Link magazine also won an award for best youth publication.Andrews later moved to Montserrat to take up a position as sub-editor/reporter of weekly newspaper The
Montserrat Reporter and continued to write for The Associated Press.He moved to the British Virgin Islands on
January 4 ,2003 to take up a post as reporter for The BVI Standpoint where he was later promoted to sports coordinator.He has since moved into the broadcast media in various posts of news director, report and freelance writer/news anchor at radio stations ZKING FM, ZCCR FM, ZROD 103.7 FM; and TV stations
CBN andJTV .He was also the founding editor of the BVI Government’s official youth publication, Buzz BVI.
