The Saits

The Saits are a community that branched off from the Kutchi Memons who are essentiallyKutchi speaking, Sunni Muslims, who originally hail from Kutch in Gujarat, a state of India.Historically, Kutch was a princely state and this kingdom included Bhuj, Anjar, Lakhpath,
Mandvi, etc. The Kutchi Memons are now spread all over the globe with concentrated populationin Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, and Ooty.

Kutchi Memons have this unique surname SAIT (for men) and BAI (for women). The communityhas a very modern outlook and most individuals are educated. The community is very peculiarabout is unique identity and in many orthodox pockets marriage outside the community isstill looked upon as treachery. The written Language is mostly Urdu but regional languagesare used for local communications.

The size of the population cannot be determined due to its lack of concentration but estimations would put their number close to 0.4 million people. The community follows allthe basic Sunni Islamic tradition but with somewhat different practices.
