The club was founded in 2004 by a merger of two clubs from
Abu Ghosh andMevasseret Zion , and was named Hapoel Mevasseret Zion/Abu Ghosh. In 2007 the club was bought by a group of disenchanted Hapoel Jerusalem fans, and renamed Hapoel Katamon. The new name was taken fromKatamon , a suburn of Jerusalem where Hapoel played from their establishment in the 1930s until moving to theTeddy Stadium in the 1980s.The club is one of the first in Israel to be owned by its fans, [ [http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/914954.html Thousands show up to cheer experimental fan-owned soccer team] Haaretz] and was formed at the initiative of
