Za Dynasty

The Za Dynasty were rulers of the kingdom of Kukiya in what is today modern Niger. After a century of so, the dynasty converted to Islam under Za Kusoy. He moves the kingdom or at least its political focus west to Gao in modern Mali. There he sets up a small muslim state on the bend of the Niger River, which capitalizes on the growing trans-saharan trade. The kingdom of Gao grew into a small regional power before being conquered by the Mali Empire in the early 13th century.
