Next = Under Covers"Honor Code" is the seventh episode of the third season of the drama television series, "NCIS".

ummary

The episode centers around a child whose calm, clear thought patterns and analytical observation skills uncannily resemble those of Special Agent Leroy Gibbs, head of the NCIS squad that is investigating the disappearance of the boy's father, a Navy computer specialist with highest level security clearance. The boy observed his father being kidnapped from a fairground during their day out. The tension in the episode centres on the debate as to whether the man is a traitor or a true kidnap victim. If a victim, he is presumed to be subject to torture for the code key needed to break the computer system, with a threat against his son being used as leverage, the child having no mother alive and no other family to protect him.

Against the weight of initial evidence, Gibbs believes that the man must be a victim because his child is patently honest and hero worships his father. Gibbs avers that to know the man, simply look at the son. The team observes the shared mannerisms of Gibbs and the child and Gibbs' ability to bond and communicate with the child. Tony's efforts, by contrast, are hopeless. Abby and Ducky's babysitting is more successful.

When an attempt is made by the villains to kidnap the child from social workers allocated to care for him, Gibbs rescues him and takes the child to Gibbs' home where they work on Gibbs' famous boat-in-the-basement. We see Gibbs' memory flashbacks to when he used to work on his boat in the same way with a little girl, his deceased daughter. The weight of evidence against the computer specialist shifts when the man's coworkers are discovered to be connected to the crime. Officer Ziva David, Mossad operative on secondment, is asked to use her interrogation skills on one of the female coworkers to extract the whereabouts of the missing man who is being tortured, if still alive. Gibbs invites McGee to go with him to seek coffee whilst Ziva works, so that there are no witnesses. Upon their return, the visibly scared conspirator yields all necessary information and the viewer can only wonder how the conspirator was turned into a quivering wreck so quickly. A rescue of the computer specialist is effected and he is eventually reunited with his son, with Gibbs looking on, clearly wistful.
