The original mixture used Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Bombay Sapphire Gin. This recipe should be considered the reference standard. The official Triumph Brewing Company version uses Triumph Bengal Gold IPA and either Bombay Sapphire or OId Raj Gin.

The Pipe Wrench is named for its strong intoxicating effects, legendarily mimicking the effects of being smashed in the head with a pipe wrench. The name is also a pun on the inventor's nickname. The cocktail was invented by Adam "Pipe" Fitting, former CEO and Chaplain of Triumph Brewing Company.

Introduced in 1994 as a signature cocktail at Triumph Brewing Company in Princeton, New Jersey, this powerful concoction was actually first mixed at the Ale & Witch pub in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

The popularity of the drink has spread over a wide geographic area, and is now offered on the menus of establishments throughout the United States.
