Glens Falls Greenjackets

Glens Falls Greenjackets

The Glens Falls Greenjackets are an amateur American football team based in Glens Falls, New York.Owned and operated by North East Sports Management, they are currently members of the Empire Division of the Eastern Conference (NAFL1-East) in the North American Football League (NAFL).

Origin of the Name

Of the original 1928 Greenjackets team, only guard Dick Carpenter is alive. His home is in Fort Edward and he does his best to see as many games as he can. His memories are vivid and his face lights up when talking about those wonderful past years he had, playing with the Greenjackets. Such as when a bunch of guys on a street corner came together to form a football team. He remembers that the Greenjackets held a contest that first year to get a name for their team. A little girl, who no one can remember, came up with the name "Greenjackets" and won a free pass for all of the 1928 games. The admission was 50 cents a game. The league in 1928 was made up of such teams as the Watervliet Mariners, Troy Bearcats, Saratoga Brown Bears, and the Fort Ethan Allen from Vermonth, which was an Army team. It was nice playing the Army team at their fort in Vermont because they would feed the Greenjackets beans and homemade corn bread after the game and after everyone had eaten, the Army players would bet the Greenjackets players that they couldn't ride the pack mules for a full minute. Many a 25 cent bets changed hands.

The Greenjackets finished the 2003 season at 15-2. They were the 2003 runner-up northeastern US champion - Harvest Bowl VII. They were the 2003 New York state champion as well as the 2003 EFL southern division champion. The Jackets have also been the Empire Football League Champions in 1969, 1976, 2003, and 2004.
