Nan Xiren

Nan Xiren

Nan Xiren(南希仁) is a character in the wuxia novel Legend of the Condor Heroes written by Louis Cha.

Nan Xiren was one of the Seven Freaks of Jiangnan and nicknamed 'South Mountain Woodcutter'(南山樵子). He had the appearance of a lumberjack and was the quietest of the Seven Freaks, but was very direct with whatever he said.

Once, the Seven Freaks had an agreement with Qiu Chuji to track down the widows and unborn sons of Guo Xiaotian and Yang Tiexin respectively. Their job was to find the boys, train them into fine martial artists and meet again in eighteen years time for a contest between the two young men. After years of searching, the Freaks finally found the young Guo Jing and his mother Li Ping in Mongolia. They were overjoyed upon finding the boy initially, but were disappointed when they found out that Guo Jing was quite slow-witted and might not be able to master whatever they taught him.

When the Seven Freaks considered giving up on Guo Jing because of his lack of talent with martial arts, Nan Xiren made the pertinent point: he was able to accomplish martial arts skills despite not being highly gifted at a young age. This gave the other Freaks a glimmer of hope, so eventually the Freaks managed to teach Guo Jing some basic martial arts.

Nan Xiren was eventually killed at Peach Blossom Island by Ouyang Feng and Yang Kang. He died a painful and slow death when he was poisoned by Ouyang Feng, and had his tongue torn out.
