Torvikbukt

Torvikbukt

Torvikbukt is a village placed in Gjemnes municipality, Nordmøre district and Møre og Romsdal county at the west-coast of Norway. The village counts between 300 and 500 inhabitants. Sunndalsfjorden and the 994 meters high mountain Reinsfjellet make the surroundings of this small idyllic village.

Industry

The biggest and most important company is Gjøco AS (Ltd). Gjøco is a coulor- and paint producer, and has the second biggest market share in the Norwegian market for indoor-painting products. Gjøcos total sales were approximately 150 millions NOK. ($ 25 millions) (2004).

Agriculture is also an important industry. Torvikbukt has several small- and medium sized "farms", which makes a big impact at the villages surroundings and way of living. In later years many farms has been abandoned, mainly because of "lack of relatives" that will continue the production after "retirement" of the farmer. Agriculture at West-Cost of Norway can be very inefficient because of the alpine landscape, and it makes the business not very "profitable".

Tourism

Torvikbukts typical Norwegian surroundings with fjords and mountains makes it an excellent starting point for "mountain hiking", "fishing" and "boat-safari". This attracts both domestic and foreign tourists, which have resulted that the village has lots of "leisure houses". These houses are normally placed close to the fjord, where they be close to the sea and their boat.

Education

Torvikbukt has its own elementary school which cover 1st to 7th grade. The school counts approximately 40 pupils. The school has been planned closed down the latest years because of lack of funds in Gjemnes Municipality budgets, but the municipality council have "voted no" both times the issue has been discussed.
