William H. Gardiner

William H. Gardiner was a Victorian-era photographer. He is most notably known for his work of Mackinac Island, Michigan.

Gardiner's Life

Gardiner was born in Brampton, Ontario, 1861. He was the son of William Clarke Gardiner, a hotel keeper. The family lived in a small town north of Orangeville, Ontario. In 1874, the family moved to Toronto.

Gardiner's Work

Gardiner began his career working for Toronto photographers Samuel J. Dixon and Thomas E. Perkins. In the late 1880s, Gardiner moved to Orangeville, Ontario to open his own photographic business. After a time, he joined the William Still Studio.

In 1888, he opened a studio in Toronto, but by 1890, he was no longer listed as a photographer, instead as a fruitier, along with his wife, Louise.
