Biryu Baekje is a kingdom founded in Michuhol by Biryu, the son of Jumong.

Founding

Biryu and Onjo were the sons of Jumong and were the princes of Goguryeo when Jumong married Princess Soseuno of Bukbuyeo. With Soseuno as the Queen of Goguryeo, Biryu was most likely believed to be the successor of Jumong. When Yuri, another son of Jumong from a previous marriage, came from Dongbuyeo and arrived at Goguryeo, Biryu's and Onjo were threatened. The result was their departure from Goguryeo. They were accompanied by some people of Goguryeo, who were provided by Jumong Taewang. Once leaving Goguryeo, the two princes decided to divide and go their separate ways. Biryu led his share of citizens and established a new kingdom in Michuhol. The descriptions of this kingdom is said to be near the Bohai Bay, thus leading to the possibility of it being located near the Liaodong peninsula. They fought bitterly with the Malgal in the peninsula for control of the fertile regions that the Malgals had access to. The kingdom of Mahan also began to bring pressure upon Biryu's kingdom.

Downfall and aftermath

King Biryu led his people into the Korean Peninsula to join his brother's kingdom of Sipje.Biryu demanded his ascendance to the Sipje throne, but Onjo refused. Thus they had a war, but Biryu lost. because of his shame, Biryu committed suicide. Onjo, who allowed the migration of his brother's subjects, renamed the kingdom from Sipje to Baekje, meaning "one-hundred vassals" thus supporting the fact that his kingdom consisted of a hundred vassals and no longer of ten.
