Gregorio Prestopino

Gregorio Prestopino

Gregorio Prestopino (1907-1984) was an American social realist painter. He was born in the Little Italy section of New York City and attended the National Academy of Design at the age of 14. He was influenced by the Ashcan School and most of his art focuses on urban life. There is a noticeable cubist influence in his work as well. Much of his more cubist work uses brightly contrasting colors and involves human forms; his more realistic studies are largely black and white and detail poor urban suffering.

A series of Gregorio Prestopino paintings entitled, "Harlem Wednesday" toured the USA in the 1960's. A copy from that series entitled, "The Family" is on the website of The Schomburg Legacy Exhibition at the New York Public Library. The original of "The Family" hangs in a private collection in Santa Barbara, California.
