- Jochum de Lange
Jochum de Lange was a former sailor who settled down as a farmer on the island of
Flatøy ,Norway . He was the leader of the 18th century farmer'srebellion called "Strilekrigen ". He led several thousand men toBergen , to protest against the high taxes which were imposed on the poor farmers. Jochum later died in a Bergen Prison.Personal life
He was said to be a charismatic man, who easily gained other peoples trust. He was a visionary and a man with great experience. During his time as a farmer on Flatøy, he often longed back to the sea.It might have been this adventurer within him, which led him to Bergen on that crucial dayin 1765. Jochum de Lange was married three times.
In remembrance
Olav Flatøy, a businessman and writer from Flatøy, wrote a novel concerning life on Flatøy in the mid-1700s. It was called "Anne Cathrine", and told the story of Jocum de Lange, his third wife and her struggles after his death. This novel was printed as a serial in
Bergens Tidende in 1961.References
