The complex was built in 1973 by C.W. Cameron, founder of American Fidelity.. For the next twenty years it was a landmark due to four neon pigs, one on each face, belonging to Sooner Federal Savings and Loan. The tower of 50 Penn Place was once headquarters to Penn Square Bank, which failed in 1982. It was also formerly home to the flagship store of the Orbach's chain of local clothing stores (which closed in 1990). Although not currently anchored by a major retailer, 50 Penn Place is at nearly full occupancy, containing a number of upscale shops and restaurants, including a brewpub, independent bookstore, and various office tenants including an FBI field office. Balliet's, a women's clothier, was one of the mall's original tenants. The complex is also home to the 50 Penn Place Art Gallery.

Midland Oak Realty purchased the building from MBL Life Assurance for $15 million in 1997.cite news|url=http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4182/is_19971003/ai_n10113162|publisher=Journal Record|author=Emily Graham|title=Building's new owners plan series of upgrades|date=2007-10-03] It is currently owned by a Dallas-based capital management company, which bought the building for $25.7 million in 2004, along with 25 tenants=in-common. A planned sale fell through in 2008. [cite news|url=http://newsok.com/article/3210005/1204255619|publisher=Daily Oklahoman|title=Court catches 50 Penn Place deal|date=2008-02-29|author=Richard Mize]
