- Tibás Canton
Tibás is the name of the 13th canton in the province of San José in
Costa Rica . The canton covers an area of 8.15 km² [Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), 2001.] , and has a population of 76,815 [Estimates of Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INEC), May 2003.] . The capital city of the canton is San Juan.The canton forms a northern suburb of the national capital city of San José. It is triangular in shape, with the Río Virilla as its northern boundary. The Quebrada Rivera, a canyon, establishes the southwestern limit of the canton and also a portion of the southeastern boundary.
Tibás includes both industrial and residential neighborhoods and is home of one of the most popular soccer team in Costa Rica,
Deportivo Saprissa . The current mayor is Jorge Salas Bonilla from the center-leftist Citizen Action Party.The canton of Tibás is subdivided into 5 distritos (districts).

The canton was established by law on July 27, 1914. It was formerly known as San Juan del Murciélago.
