- Ion Picolescu
Ion Picolescu (1930-1969)- was a Moldovan
poet and essayist.Picolescu was born in a small town Kubznieci in
Raionul Edineţ district. He was the youngest of 4 children, his father, Bogdan Picolescu was a respected farmer. He received his early education at Kubznieci Grammar School. In 1948 he was enrolled to Chişinău University of Arts, unfortunately his poor academic performance caused him to be expelled a year later.He has been writing poetry since age 7, unfortunately many of his early writings and drafts were lost when his house was damaged in military operations during
World War II .His love to poetry was encouraged by his school teachers, who advised him to send some of his writings to local newspapers. Although none of the newspapers printed any of his works, he did not give up his passion.His talent was recognised in 1950, when his poem "Prut", depicting the unique beauty of Prut river, gave him second place in a prestigious Northern Edineţ Folklore Art and Poetry Festival. He gained recognition and since then his works were published many times in newspapers and magazines.
He published two sets of his poems- "Prut" in 1955 and "Vis Comica" in 1960. The latter was especially popular and its circulation reached 3000 copies.
