René Avilés Fabla

René Avilés Fabila is one of the most important Mexican writers, whose work is recognized in Mexico and Iberoamerica.

Biography

He was born on November the 15th of 1940 in Mexico City.

Writing

He obtained a degree in International Relations and went on to postgraduate studies at the University of Paris. His bibliography is very ample and includes stories, novels, books of memories, essays and articles.

Awards

In his more than forty years of literary, educational and journalistic work, he has obtained diverse prizes and recognitions.
* In 1991 the Mexican Republic Government granted him the National Prize of Journalism for diffusion of culture.
* Diverse institutions such as the Club of Journalists have granted him national prizes.
* In 1972 the Casa de las Américas, Havana, Cuba, recognized the story book "The disappearance of Hollywood"
* In 1997, the Mexican National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature and the state of Colima gave him the Prize for the best book of published narrative for his work Prodigious Animals in collaboration with the poet Rubén Bonifaz Nuño and illustrated by José Luis Cuevas.
* In 1964 he obtained a scholarship of the Mexican Center of Writers, where under the direction of Juan Rulfo, Juan José Arreola, and Francisco Monterde he wrote his first story book: "Towards the end of the world", published by the Fondo de Cultura Económica, and several times by the National System of Creators.

Avilés Fabila has received awards on multiple occasions by public and private institutions, journalistic universities and organizations and cultural associations, with a number of tributes to celebrate his 25, 30 and 40 years of literary activity.

Cultural activity

* Head of Information of the Organizing Committee of XX the Olympic Games, under the direction of Rafael Solana (1967-1968)
* Publication Director of the National Institute of Mexican Youth (1967-1968)
* Assistant director of Public Relations of the ECF (1974-1975)
* General Director of Cultural Diffusion of the NAUM (1984-1986)
* Cultural Adviser and Director of Governmental Edition the Internal Committee of the Department of the Federal District
* Director of the Center of Writers "Juan Jose Arreola" of the Lamm House from 1989
* During the period 1998-2002, coordinator of one of University Extension of MAU-Xochimilco.
* From 1996 he has been a member of the European Society of Culture (Venice), whose honorary president, until his death, was Norberto Bobbio.
* In 2003 he founded the [http://www.fundacionraf.com René Avilés Fabila Cultural Foundation] , a private organisation that contributes nationally and internationally to the culture and arts, mainly spreading Mexican literary heritage.He has participated in conferences at various universities in Mexico and elsewhere like the NAUM, the MAU, Latin American University of Yale, University of Kansas, University of Paris, and UCLA, among others. His work in academic and directive positions in public universities like National Autonomous University of Mexico (NAUM) and Metropolitan Autonomous University (MAU) has always been related to Culture and Art. He has been a member of the Faculty of Political Sciences of the NAUM since 1975 and professor in the MAU-Xochimilco unit.

Journalism

* Starting in 1962, Avilés Fabila has collaborated in diverse newspapers of national circulation: El Día, El Universal, El Nacional, Excélsior, Diario de México.
* He was one of the founders of the newspaper Unomásuno.
* Current editor of the newspaper Excélsior, and had been director of its cultural section (1984-1986) when he founded the cultural supplement El Búho (1985-1999).
* From 2004 to 2005, he was Director of Magazine of Magazines, publication dean of Mexico, founded in 1910.
* For more than ten years he had his own programs in the Mexican Institute of the Radio and in the XEW station, all of them cultural ones with a special emphasis on Literature.
* On 1999 he created the cultural magazine [http://www.reneavilesfabila.com.mx/universodeelbuho/index.htm Universe of The Owl (Universo de El Búho)] which today has more than eighty issues.
