Syosset High School, located on Southwoods Road in Syosset, New York, USA is the only high school for residents of the Syosset Central School District.

Overview

The school was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 1992-1993. The school district as a whole was also the 2002 winner of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network and National School Boards Association Award, which honors school districts for excellence in arts education. The school was also named a Grammy Signature school in recognition of its superior music education programs [http://www.prweb.com/releases/2004/4/prwebxml121194.php] . It recently was rated fourteenth in the country for music education by the National Association for Music Education. [http://homework.syosset.k12.ny.us/syossetcsd/AboutSy.htm]

SHS's publications "The Pulse" (school newspaper) and "Ken" (literary magazine) have won many awards. Its Forensics Speech & Debate team has taken home both state and national championships. The school has strong Model United Nations, Model Congress, and National Champion Quiz Bowl teams. In April 2007 the Quiz Bowl team finished off a near perfect Quiz Net season with a victory in the national championship. [http://qunlimited.com/quiznet1.html] ). The Science Olympiad Team has also competed at the state level. Syosset's Tri-M Chapter has been named Chapter of the Year numerous times.

SHS offers a wide range of courses, including many Advanced Placement courses, as well as Syracuse University courses offered through [http://supa.syr.edu SU Project Advance] . In a move to become ranked higher in national statistics, Syosset has done away with all of its honors classes. Students are now forced to choose between taking a regular course or a sometimes over challenging AP course. This controversial move has called into question if Syosset High School has its students best interests in mind, or is just trying to gain unnecessary prestige. Another issue that has recently been called into play, is the large contingent of Syosset kids that failed last year's Math B Regents. Syosset High School has the top ranked varsity golf team on Long Island. It is one of the few schools on Long Island to give a Russian Regents; Japanese and Latin also have multi-year programs. It boasts a three-year research program in which students enter competitions such as the Intel Science Talent Search.
