Takano Chōei

Takano Chōei

was a prominent scholar of Rangaku of the late Edo period.

He was born a son of a doctor in Mizusawa Domain of Mutsu Province (present-day Iwate Prefecture). After learning medicine in Edo he studied under Philipp Franz von Siebold in Nagasaki. In 1838 he published a book critical of the Tokugawa shogunate's handling of Morrison Incident (1837). For this he was sentenced to death. In 1844 he escaped prison and kept hiding with a false identity. When he returned to Edo he was found by the shoguante and committed suicide.
