John Prideaux

John Prideaux (1578-1650) was an English academic and bishop of Worcester.

Life

Described as "one of the most influential Calvinists inside the Church" [Hugh Trevor-Roper, "Archbishop Laud", p. 44.] , he was Fellow and Rector of Exeter College, Oxford, and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford ["Concise Dictionary of National Biography"] .

He held the living of Bladon from 1625 [ [http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=3359 Bladon - Church | British History Online ] ] . He was censured in 1631 for his tolerance of preachers in Oxford attacking William Laud [Trevor-Roper, "Laud", p. 116.] .

Works

Matthias Prideaux, a Royalist soldier, was his son, and predeceased him in 1646. John edited his work on history [Christopher Hill, "The English Bible and the Seventeenth-Century Revolution" (1993), p. 29 footnote.] .

He wrote a substantial academic treatise, "Hypomnemata", as well as theological works.
