History

Banba-juku was originally a post town along the Tōsandō during the Asuka period. However, in 1611, during the Edo period, when a port in Maibara was established, it became part of the Nakasendō, connecting travelers on their way to Ōtsu-juku. Positioned between mountains, [http://www.city.hikone.shiga.jp/sangyobu/kanko/torii.html Nakasendou Toriimoto-juku] . Hikone City. Accessed July 20, 2007.] it was in an ideal location for travelers.
