Ramananda (
1400 ?-1470 ?) was aVaishnava sant , a "Ramayat", a devotee ofLord Ram . He lived inVaranasi . Like other sant-poets of northern India, he communicated in vernacular Hindi, and accepted disciples of allcaste s.Kabir mentions him as hisguru .Ramananda was a disciple of
Raghavananda , an ascetic of theSri Vaishnava order, expounded byRamanuja and was known for his downplaying the role of caste.He had disciples from all castes.Ramananda's most famous disciples wereAnantananda ,Bhavananda ,Dhanna Bhagat ,Kabir ,Nabha ,Naraharyananda ,Pipa ,Ravidas ,Sain ,Sukhananda , andTulsidas .It is from the "Parichai" of Anantdas and "Satik Bhaktamal" of Priyadas that we know Ravidas was initiated by the great Ramananda. Ramanandi Sampradaya consider Ramananda to be their founder. The mendicants of this order were known as "vairagi".ee also
