Pakgis

PAKGIS Online is an initiative to promote GIS development in Pakistan. It is a web portal through which improved co-operation among GI-scientists, educators, GI professionals and students can be established. Pakgis Online works to promote research and innovation, better use of technology and providing knowledge and support for individuals using Geographic information Systems and science.

History

GIS Technology was publicly introduced in Pakistan in the year 1997 by Dr. M. Atiq ur Rahman (founder of Pakistan Society of GIS). Since then few companies in Pakistan have adopted GIS and related technologies for solving various geo-spatial problems. It was not until 2005 that the need for a common platform for all individuals & entities utilizing GIS Technology in Pakistan was recognized. Therefore in order to fill this vital gap between various entities and to improve collaboration between them, PAKGIS Online initiative was taken in late 2006.
