This 2002 election was one of the closest election in American history. The race was between Democratic incumbent Tim Johnson who was elected in 1996 narrowly and Then-congressman John Thune in the end Johnson narrowly beat Thune by 524 votes Johnson's close margin of victory was made possible by final returns from Shannon County on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, which reported twice the turnout of the previous election and 92% votes for Johnson. In 2004 John Thune would face Senate Majority leader Tom Daschle and would beat Tom by 4,508 votes.
