The Minnesota Library Association (MLA)

VISION STATEMENT

[http://www.mnlibraryassociation.org/ Minnesota Library Association] Ensures a Future with Libraries.

MISSION STATEMENT The Minnesota Library Association is an association of library supporters, representing all types of libraries by helping them accomplish together what none can do alone. MLA supports Minnesota libraries by facilitating educational opportunities, supporting strong ethical standards, providing legislative assistance and fostering connections between the library community and various constituencies.

History

MLA began 1891, but was not officially incorporated until 1967. William Watts Folwell, the first President, served as President of the Association for nine years. Over one hundred Presidents have followed in his footsteps. MLA members represent many kinds of libraries and library staff, including public, academic, school, special, multi-type, institutional, and others. Friends of the library, trustees, and many other community members as well as corporate friends help comprise the current 1,100 members.

How Does MLA Work?

The Board of Directors, elected by the membership, provides leadership to the organization. The membership subunits--Divisions, Sections, and Round Tables--carry out MLA activities. MLA staff includes an Executive Director, Office Manager, and a Lobbyist.

Affiliations

MLA is a chapter of the American Library Association (ALA). The purpose of a chapter is to promote general library service and librarianship within its geographic areas, to provide geographic representation to the Council of the American Library Association, and to cooperate in the promotion of general and joint enterprises with ALA. Peer groups in the state that we recognize as affiliate members include: ASIST, HSLM, MALL, MEMO, SLA , and ASI.

Benefits

*Provides an opportunity to meet library peers and associates.

*Meets the interests of its members by facilitating educational opportunities, supporting strong ethical standards, and fostering connections between the library community and various constituencies. An annual three-day conference, featuring approximately 70 programs held in the fall. Programs are planned and sponsored by Divisions, Sections, Round Tables, and Committees. Members receive reduced registration rates.

*Has an effective lobbying effort which has been instrumental in obtaining increases in state aid to libraries, securing legislation enabling inter-library cooperation, and enhancing the library community throughout the state.

*The MLA Newsletter, published in print and online, keeps members informed about the activities in which they can participate. New members are encouraged to become active and attend a variety of events.

How to Get Involved in MLA

MLA depends upon its members to remain a vital organization. The Board of Directors invites you to become an active participant in MLA. Members are needed to hold office, chair committees, conduct workshops, volunteer for MLA events, actively participate in meetings and help plan and organize the annual conference
