- The Schemers
The Schemers was a Providence, Rhode Island hard rock band circa 1979-1986 recording on Big Bubble Records.
The Schemers were the winners of the 1982 WBRU Radio Rock Hunt in Providence, R.I., and then the 1984
WBCN Rock 'n' Roll Rumble, in Boston, MA. Their hit single, "Remember," was the number 1 song on WBRU for over 10 weeks in early 1982. They had a sound that was a cross between a punk Elvis Costello and a dissatisfied Tom Petty ("I've had enough of these plain-Jane girls/ I think it's time I went downtown," sang lead singer Mark Cutler in "High Fashion Girl") and then on the nostalgic "Remember" ("I know I'm going somewhere/ maybe in the ground, maybe nowhere"). The Schemers never gained the national popularity of such other Providence bands like TheThrowing Muses , Belly, TheTalking Heads , or John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. The Schemers only CD was released in 2004. "Remember [http://www.emersontorrey.com/music.cfm?pid=1] " featured the hit singles "High Fashion Girl," "I Want Some Fun" and the haunting "Remember" MP3: [http://www.emersontorrey.com/music/The%20Schemers%20(02)%20-%20Track%2002.mp3]
