Hatchards is the oldest
bookshop in theUnited Kingdom . It was founded in 1797 onPiccadilly inLondon , from where it still trades today. It has a reputation for attracting high-profile authors and holds threeRoyal Warrant s. Today Hatchards is a sister bookshop toWaterstones , both companies being owned byHMV . Hatchards attracts famous authors including J.K Rowling, who signed Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Alexander McCall-Smith, Peter Ackroyd, Margaret Thatcher, Lauren Bacall, Stephen Fry, Jeremy Paxman, Joanne Harris, the late Alec Guinness, David Attenborough. The only antiquarian books sold are by and about Winston Churchill. Other specialist subjects are Gardening, Biography, Art and Royalty. In 2006 Mowbrays Religious Bookshop moved into Hatchards. All books can be ordered online through their website, telephone or fax and sent worldwide.An interesting annual event held before Christmas in late November / early December is the Hatchards Christmas Customer Evening when over twenty authors are in attendance.
