The team plays in the American National Rugby League competition and have to date claimed a sole Championship title in the 2002 season. The side often provides several players to the USA national side each year so far providing nine full American internationals and one Japanese [ [http://www.amnrl.com/teams/knights.html AMNRL - American National Rugby League ] ] .

The club was founded in 1997 and entered the American National Rugby League competition for its inaugural season the following year in 1998. Since then the club has gone on to become one of the strongest clubs in the AMNRL more often than not qualifying for the playoffs each year. In 2006 the Knights would perform strongly in the regular season and then go on to beat the New Haven Warriors in week one of the playoff series; however they would eventually lose 54 - 6 in week two to eventual Champions the Connecticut Wildcats.

The Knights currently use the Pier 40, Hudson River Park Stadium located on the Hudson River in . The Stadium is often referred to as "The Castle" because of the architecture and surrounding river, give the park a Castle like appearance [ [http://www.newyorkknightsrugby.com/join.php New York Knights RLFC - Join Us ] ] .

The Stadium currently seats several thousand and over the 2005 off-season underwent renovation work to update the ground including the installation of artificial turf meaning it is the only AMNRL venue with this type of turf. The Stadium is also used for soccer fixtures.
