Papua New Guinea national football team results

Papua New Guinea national football team results

This article lists the Papua New Guinea national football team results since 1969. Their first competitive match was on 26 February 1980 in the 1980 OFC Nations Cup. Before then, the team had only played friendly matches. The national team plays relatively few games. For example, since 19 May 2004 they have played just one match, and that a friendly.

Papua New Guinea were disqualified from the 2010 FIFA World Cup when they failed to enter the 2007 South Pacific Games, which acted as the first qualification stage.

Success has been hard to achieve. In 1996 they won the Melanesia Cup against Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to qualify for the second round of the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification tournament. At that stage they were eliminated. However, in that tournament they gained their most notable result in recent years when they beat New Zealand 1-0, at home, on 31 May 1997. Then in 2002 Papua New Guinea won the qualification stage of the Oceania Nations Cup against New Caledonia, Samoa, Tonga, and American Samoa to qualify for the group stage, when they were eliminated.
