known_for = Mind Styles ModelAnthony F. Gregorc is most well known for his theory of a Mind Styles Model and its associated "Style Delineator". [ [http://library.thinkquest.org/C005704/content_hwl_gls.php3 Learning Styles at ThinkQuest.org] accessed July 2007]
Career
Gregorc has taught mathematics and biology. He has been principal of a laboratory school for gifted youth and Associate Professor at two American universities. His learning styles ideas are based on brain hemispherical research [http://www.usd.edu/~ssanto/gregorc.html Gregorc Learning styles at University of South Dakota site] accessed July 2007]
The four types identified are:
* "Concrete Sequential learners" want step by step instructions using real examples you can touch.
* "Concrete Random Learners" want real examples, but want to browse through the knowledge in a trial and error manner
* "Abstract Sequential " want clear visual material that is well organised
* "Abstract Random " however are happy to find a trial and error approach to visual material. One of the benefits of this approach is to identify how different students learn. For instance, some researchers have concluded that computer-mediated learning may be difficult for some students. [See Ross, J. & Schulz, R. [1999] . Can computer-aided instruction accommodate all learners equally? British Journal of Educational Technology, 30 [10] , p. 5-24.)]
Dr. Gregorc's ideas have been widely discussed, but not universally agreed. A report from the UK think-tank Demos reported the evidence for learning styles as "highly variable", and that practitioners were "not by any means frank about the evidence for their work." Hargreaves, D., et al. (2005). [http://www.demos.co.uk/catalogue/aboutlearning/ "About learning: Report of the Learning Working Group"] . Demos.]
