River Subdivision

The River Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of New Jersey and New York. The line runs from Bogota, New Jersey north to Selkirk, New York [ [http://web.archive.org/web/20030129000526/www.trainweb.org/csxtimetables/Albany/River.html CSX Timetables: River Subdivision] ] along a former New York Central Railroad line.

At its south end, the River Subdivision continues south as the short Bergen Subdivision before becoming Conrail's North Jersey Shared Assets Area. The River Subdivision's north end is at a junction with the Selkirk Subdivision (the main New York City-Chicago line) and the Port Subdivision (a spur into Albany).

History

The line was opened by a number of different companies from the 1860s to the opening of the full line in the 1880s, by which time it was known as the New York, West Shore and Buffalo Railway. [http://nyc.railfan.net/westshore.html] Through mergers, leases, and takeovers, it became part of the New York Central Railroad and Conrail. When Conrail was broken up in 1999, the River Subdivision was assigned to CSX.
