Slick Coffman

George David "Slick" Coffman (December 11, 1910 - May 8, 2003) was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played 4 years in the big leagues with the Detroit Tigers (1937-1939) and St. Louis Browns (1940). Born in Veto, Alabama, Slick was the younger brother of Dick Coffman who pitched 15 years in the Major Leagues (1927-1945). Slick Coffman compiled a career record of 15-12 in 313-2/3 inning pitched with a 5.60 earned run average. His best year was his rookie season with the Tigers in 1937. In his major league debut, Slick beat Lefty Grove 4-2. Backed by the bats of Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer, Rudy York and Gee Walker, Coffman was 7-5 in 1937 with a 4.37 earned run average. After the 1937 season, three straight years with an ERA above 6.00 ended his career. Coffman died in 2003 at age 92 in Birmingham, Alabama.
