The "Journal of General Virology" is a peer-reviewed academic journal that covers research into viruses affecting animals, plants, insects, bacteria and fungi, including their molecular biology, immunology and interactions with the host. Antiviral compounds are also covered. Established in 1967, it is published monthly by the Society for General Microbiology, in Reading, UK. As of 2007, its Editor-in-Chief is Geoffrey L. Smith.

All content from the journal's foundation is available online as PDFs and, from 1999, also in text format. Papers are currently available free 12 months after print publication; additionally, selected papers considered of special importance are made freely available ahead of publication.
