The Richmond Spiders are a college football team representing the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia. Richmond currently competes in the Colonial Athletic Association of the NCAA's Division I Football Championship Subdivision. Head coach Dave Clawson resigned on January 11, 2008 to become the offensive coordinator for the University of Tennessee Volunteers. Mike London, defensive coordinator for the University of Virginia and former Richmond player, was named the Spiders' head coach on January 19, 2008. In 2007, the Spiders advanced to the Football Championship Subdivision semifinals before falling to two-time defending national champion Appalachian State.

Richmond's traditional rival in many sports is the College of William and Mary. In football, Richmond and William and Mary have met 117 times since 1898, making the rivalry (sometimes referred to as "the South's oldest rivalry") the 4th most-played in Division I college football. Only Lafayette-Lehigh, Princeton-Yale, and Harvard-Yale have played more games.
