Jim Cohen

Jim Cohen

Jim Cohen (born August 2, 1942) is an American human rights activist, attorney, environmentalist and former candidate for the United States Senate seat from Minnesota currently held by Republican Norm Coleman. Cohen sought the endorsement of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, but withdrew his candidacy after trailing far behind Al Franken.

tudent and educator

Jim Cohen graduated with honors from Cornell University and received his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School. He has taught in public and private schools in Minneapolis; and once served as board member of the Continuum Academy, a planned charter school in Minneapolis. His term on the board was short-lived, and the school has yet to open.

Environmental leadership

Jim Cohen has led two environmental organizations. He was the first director of the Washington, D.C. office of the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund (now Earth Justice), which is based in San Francisco. Cohen subsequently organized the Environmental Task Force, a national organization that assisted local groups in their efforts to protect the environment. The Environmental Task Force published a news print magazine called Re:sources, but otherwise accomplished little before it was absorbed by the more successful Environmental Action. Cohen's career has been notable for holding several leadership positions while failing to achieve a record of success in those positions or maintain a loyal following. It is hard to find any information about his environmental record on the Web. His name is not even mentioned on the Earth Justice website, nor can one find any trace of the Environmental Task Force on the Web, including on the website of Environmental Action (which subsumed the organization he founded and led). His limited leadership skills were demonstrated once again with his poor showing in the Minnesota senate race.
