Alfred Charlesworth

Alfred Charlesworth (May 9, 1865 — December 4, 1928) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire during the 1898 season. Charlesworth was born in Simmondley and died in St-Anne's-on-Sea, now part of Lytham St Annes.

Charlesworth represented the team during seven games in the season, making his debut in a crushing innings defeat by Essex. Charlesworth, despite being absent hurt in the first innings, returned during Derbyshire's attempt at bowling out Essex, in which every player but Solomon Hardy and opener Sydney Evershed had a crack at bowling for the team, in many cases economical but unsuccessful.

Charlesworth turned his hand to bowling just once more during his spell at the club, batting in the first innings for the first time in a draw against Nottinghamshire. Charlesworth was a lower-order/tailend batsman during his short time at the club, kept off the bottom of the batting order by three-season Derbyshire representative Frank Davidson.

Charlesworth's last match, against Yorkshire, set the record for the largest margin of defeat in a Derbyshire game in first-class history. Charlesworth was absent hurt in the second innings, and never played first-class cricket again.
