Front Royal, Virginia . Miller received his A.B from theUniversity of Richmond in 1924, and his M.A. in psychology from theUniversity of Virginia in 1928. Miller received his Ph.D. fromColumbia University (Ph.D.) in 1933.Miller was a Psychology instructor at the
College of William and Mary from 1925 to 1928, and atBucknell University from 1930 to 1935. He served as President ofKeuka College from 1935 to 1941. In 1941, Miller was appointed Associate Commissioner of Education for the State ofNew York .Miller was selected President of the
University of Florida in 1947. During his tenure, the University experienced a huge surge in enrollment from the return of troops following the end ofWorld War II and the new opportunities offered them by the newG.I. Bill . Dr. Miller also oversaw the transition of the University from a school for men into a coeducational institution. Dr. Miller oversaw a massive building program to expand existing campus facilities and to develop a medical college, the first in Florida.Dr. Miller presided over the University of Florida Centennial Celebration in 1953, recognizing the one hundred years that had passed since the establishment of the University's earliest predecessor institution, the East Florida Seminary. As part of this Celebration, the campus landmark Century Tower was dedicated.
Miller died on November 14, 1953. In 1959, the
J. Hillis Miller Health Science Center at the University of Florida was dedicated in his honor. He was survived by two sons, including J. Hillis Miller, Jr..References
