George Barrington (cricketer)

George Barrington (cricketer)

George Barrington (April 20, 1857 — March 29, 1942) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a round-arm slow bowler. He was born in Pimlico and died in Kirk Langley.

Barrington made his first-class debut during the 1880 season, having made several successful appearances for the Derbyshire Friars cricket club. Barrington's first-class debut came against a team of Australians, in which he scored a duck in his first innings but became the top scorer for the team in the second, making 24 before getting himself run out. Barrington played his debut County match just three days later, in which, in his first County innings, he replicated the exact score of the second innings of his first-class match. He appeared later in the season for Gentlemen of Derbyshire during a Canadian tour of England, in a match which the Derbyshire team won by an innings and 229 runs.

Barrington was at this point struggling for consistent form in the upper order but excelled when partnered by specialist bowlers rather than specialist batsmen. The 1881 season started less promisingly, though he was once again given a chance in the upper order, where, unlike the previous year, he kept himself in with a good shout before shooting wildly in the outfield.

Barrington only played one County match between the end of 1881 and the beginning of 1884, though when he returned for the team, in the first game of the 1884 season, his first game, against Sussex, included his first and only half-century of his career, once again batted in the opening order, and only outscored in either Derbyshire innings by team-mate Ludford Docker. This gave the team further confidence, though his form would drop in the following three games, and he would find himself out of the team for three further years.

Barrington returned for Derbyshire during the 1887 season, though the team would lose all six of the season's games, and, in Barrington's last game, he would score a pair, causing him to be dropped from the team and not picked again in a County match.
