John Clayton (cricketer)

John Clayton (cricketer)

John Clayton (November 17, 1857 — April 1, 1938) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler who played for Derbyshire. He was born in Chesterfield and died in West Southbourne.

Clayton made his first-class debut during the 1881 season, having played for Gentlemen of Derbyshire during a tour by Canada the previous year. On his first-class debut, he scored a duck in his one and only innings before the match was rained off and played to a disappointing draw. He went another two years before representing the county again, in his second and final County match, against Surrey, in which he scored the only three runs of his first-class career.

According to census records, Clayton was married and worked full-time as a grocer.
