synonyms = The Zarte ("Vimba vimba") is a species of ray-finned fish in the Cyprinidae family.It is found in Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Republic of, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and Ukraine.

This species weight from 1 to 3 kg (2 to 6.5 pounds) and can grow up to 50 cm long.

In May this fish leaves the Baltic Sea and enters into the Nemunas River to lay their eggs. The eggs are laid in shallow waters, which are usually in semi-fast moving parts of smaller rivers connected to the Nemunas. "Ziobris" in Lithuania is a very important fish and 30% of the Zarte caught are in the Nemunas river. Every year there is a festival along the shore of the Nemunas to commemerate this fish.
