Atomic stopping power

Atomic stopping power

Atomic stopping power is a measure of the energy loss of a particle (usually a heavy, ionizing particle such as an alpha particle) traveling through a material. Usually expressed as MeV-cm², the atomic stopping power is the energy loss of a particle per distance traveled (MeV/cm) per number of atoms per volume (atoms/cm³). The atomic stopping power of a medium is proportional to the square root of the atomic weight (Bragg-Kleeman rule).
