Jérôme Boateng (born September 3, 1988 in Berlin) is a German footballer who plays for Hamburger SV as a defender in the Bundesliga.

Career

A player with dual German-Ghanaian nationality, Boateng is central defender [cite news | date=2007-07-05 | url=http://en.uefa.com/competitions/under19/teams/team=300047/kindstatic=16/index.html | title=Team Guide: Germany | publisher=UEFA | accessdate=2007-07-05] . He has a powerful physique and is versatile enough to play any full back position. He started his career with the youth team of Tennis Borussia Berlin and currently plays for Hamburger SV.

Boateng was with Hertha Berlin from July 1, 2002 when he was 13 years old, to 22 August 2007. After emerging from the youth team set-up, he played for the reserves for one season, before winning a call-up to the first team squad on 31 January, 2007. He made his debut against Hannover 96 in the AWD-Arena, during week 19 [cite news | date=2007-01-31 | url=http://transfermarkt.de/de/wettbewerb/L1/1bundesliga/uebersicht/53655/stenogramm.html | title=1.Bundesliga | publisher=Transfermarkt | accessdate=2007-01-31] of the 2006-07 Bundesliga season. He then became a first team regular, despite being barely 18 years of age.

Boateng has played several times for the German Under 16, Under 17 and Under 19 national teams. On 5 July, 2007 he was called up to the German under-19 squad by coach [http://www.uefa.com/competitions/under19/teams/team=300047/kindstatic=1/index.html Frank Engel] [cite news | date=2007-07-05 | url=http://www.herthabsc.de/index.php?id=15702&tx_ttnews%5Btt_news%5D=1554&tx_ttnews%5BbackPid%5D=252&cHash=cd1f50f1ed | title=Jerome Boateng called up to Euro 2008 | publisher=Hertha BSC | accessdate=2007-07-05] for the 2007 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship held in Austria, from July 16 until July 27. He moved to Hamburg on 22 August 2007 for a fee said to be around €1.1M [cite news | date=2007-08-24 | url=http://www.morgenpost.de/content/2007/08/24/sport/917494.html | title=Das neue Gesicht von Hertha BSC | publisher=Berliner Morgenpost | accessdate=2007-08-24] .

Personal life

Boateng has a German mother and a Ghanaian father. His uncle is a former Ghana international. He has two brothers, Kevin and George, both footballers. Kevin-Prince Boateng was recently transferred to English club, Tottenham Hotspur F.C. from Hertha in 2007, but George is "not" the same as the current Hull City midfielder. Kevin-Prince is rumoured to be leaving to join his brother Jérôme at Hamburg in the Bundesliga in the summer of 2008.
