Superliga Brasileira de Voleibol
- Superliga Brasileira de Voleibol
The Superliga Brasileira de Voleibol (Portuguese for "Brazilian Volleyball Superleague") is the top level Brazilian volleyball competition and it is organized by the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation. There are both men's and women's competitions. The number of participating clubs changes each year.
History
Until the 1960s, there were only state volleyball competitions in Brazil, without a national level competition.
Until 1978, there was also the Taça Brasil ("Brazil Trophy"), which was a competition between Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais state clubs. Since 1976, this competition was opened to amateur clubs of all Brazilian states, and was held every two years.
In 1981, the first edition of the Campeonato Brasileiro ("Brazilian Championship"), or Liga Nacional ("National League"), was disputed by professional clubs.
The Superliga was disputed for the first time in the 1994/1995 season, replacing the Liga Nacional.
