Born in
Pisa , Raffaele Rossi entered the Discalced Carmelite onOctober 3 ,1887 , and made his profession onDecember 19 ,1899 . He was ordained to the priesthood onDecember 21 ,1901 , after studying at theCarmelite International College andCarmelite Scholasticate inRome . He then taught at Carmelite houses of studies from 1902 to 1920.On
April 22 ,1920 , Rossi was appointedBishop of Volterra byPope Benedict XV . He received his episcopal consecration on the followingMay 25 fromGaetano Cardinal De Lai , with ArchbishopRinaldo Rousset , OCD, and BishopPio Bagnoli , OCD, serving as co-consecrators, in the church of "S. Teresa al Corso d'Italia". Before being promoted toTitular Archbishop of Thessalonica onDecember 20 ,1923 , Rossi was namedAssessor of the Sacred Consistorial Congregation andsecretary of theCollege of Cardinals onJune 7 of that same year.Pope Pius XI created him Cardinal Priest of "S. Prassede" in theconsistory ofJune 30 ,1930 , in advance of Rossi's appointment as Secretary of the Sacred Consistorial Congregation onJuly 4 ,1930 . As Secretary, Rossi was essentially the head of thatdicastery as thePope traditionally held the title ofPrefect . He was also one of the cardinal electors who participated in the 1939 papal conclave that selectedPope Pius XII .The Cardinal died in
Crespano del Grappa , at age 71. He is buried at the church of "S. Teresa al Corso d'Italia", where he had been ordained a bishop.External links
