Joeys apartment

Joeys apartment

Chandler and Joey's apartment is a fictional Manhattan apartment that served as a regular setpiece on the American sitcom Friends. In terms of the show's main action, it was not as central a setting as Monica's apartment or Central Perk. It acted not so much as a gathering place for the six friends, but as more of a sanctuary for its two residents, where they could drink beer, watch Baywatch, relax in their reclining chairs and play games such as foosball, on a Nintendo 64, 'hammer darts', 'fireball' and the less-popular 'ultimate fireball'. It was also the home of The Chick and The Duck and the entertainment unit. It was generally a mess, in stark contrast to Monica's apartment, which she always kept neat and tidy. Finally, it was considerably more modest than Monica's apartment, and was considered generally realistic for two men of average income to afford in New York.

The apartment was a testament to Joey and Chandler's lazy lifestyle. When their kitchen table broke, rather than replace it with another, they instead purchased a foosball table and resolved to eat over the sink. When Chandler's bedroom door was accidentally sawn in half, it was left that way until Rachel moved in, even though it consistently tripped Chandler up.

Other residents of the apartment over the years included Kip (Chandler's original roommate, who moved out and got married), Eddie Minowick (a mentally disturbed man who terrorised Chandler when Joey moved out for a short period in the second season), Ross (who spent a couple of episodes there as he looked for a new apartment), Monica and Rachel (who traded apartments with Chandler and Joey for a brief time during season four), Phoebe (who lived there for a very short time after Rachel and Phoebe's other apartment burned down), Janine (an Australian dancer who lived with Joey for a short time after Chandler left), and Rachel (who moved in for three seasons).

The furnitureThe only relatively consistent decorations in the apartment were a framed picture of Laurel and Hardy, statues of The Three Stooges, the two reclining armchairs, the foosball table, a poster for the 1976 film Les Mysteres de New-York, a large white porcelain dog that Joey had acquired whilst working on Days of Our Lives and a Magna Doodle on the front door, on which little jokes were often written. Later there was a brown recliner chair belonging to Joey named Rosita (Chandler had one to match which he took with him when he moved in with Monica), while the television was named Stevie; both were named by Joey.

The entertainment unit was a piece of furniture which became something of a running gag during season three and the beginning of season four.

Joey originally started building the unit in The One With Frank Jr. as a place where he and Chandler could put their mail, but decided to take it 'to the next level' (Chandler asked if he was, therefore, building a post office). Although the unit was so big that it covered both of their bedroom doors, Chandler tolerated it for some time.

In The One with the Cat, Chandler finally insisted the entertainment unit be sold. While showing it to one potential customer, Joey climbed inside one of the cabinets, to prove it "could hold a grown man." The customer proceeded to lock him in and steal virtually all of their possessions. For some reason, when the apartment was robbed, the Magna Doodle, Dog statue and the Laurel and Hardy picture were not stolen.

Without any furniture, Joey and Chandler were forced to swap the entertainment unit for a canoe.

Chandler later refurnished the apartment out of guilt for kissing Joey's then girlfriend Kathy. However the original black leather recliners which had been stolen were replaced with brown ones.
